The two linear andesitic islands are about 2 km long and represent the western and northern remnants of the rim of a largely submarine caldera lying east and south of the islands. When the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haapai volcano erupted in 2015 scientists did not expect the land mass it formed to last.

1 day agoThe Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano is located about 30km south-east of Fonuafoou island in Tonga. The volcano is located about 30 kilometers 19 miles southeast of Fonuafoou Island Tonga. The small islands of Hunga Tonga and Hunga Haapai cap a large seamount located about 30 km SSE of Falcon Island.

The Tongan islands immediately surrounding Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai appear to have borne the brunt of the aftermath but the consequences can be. Our research into these earlier eruptions suggests this is one of the massive explosions.
